What makes touch controls actually good in strategy games
A brilliant strategy game can be unplayable on a phone if the controls were clearly designed for a mouse. We judge every game partly on this, so here is what we look for.
Big, forgiving hit areas come first. If you have to tap a two-millimetre button to upgrade a tower mid-wave, something is wrong. Good games grow the tap target during pressure moments.
Zoom and pan should feel like they belong on a touchscreen. Pinch-to-zoom that lags or snaps back is a constant annoyance. The best games let you park the camera and trust it stays.
Finally, a proper pause changes everything. Strategy on mobile works when you can stop, think, and issue orders calmly. Games that force real-time panic on a small screen almost always frustrate us.
