When a good game turns into a grind

When a good game turns into a grind

August 24, 2026 · Markus Vogel

We have abandoned plenty of promising games the moment they turned into a chore. The shift is usually subtle, so we started watching for the warning signs.

The clearest one is when progress stalls and the game suggests waiting instead of playing. A good strategy game gives you a new decision to make; a grindy one gives you a longer bar to fill.

Another sign is repeated content with reskinned numbers. If wave thirty is just wave ten with bigger health pools and no new ideas, the design has run out. We say so plainly in reviews.

None of this means a game is bad up to that point. Sometimes the first ten hours are excellent and we recommend them with a clear note on where it starts to drag. Knowing when to stop is part of enjoying a game.
